↠ LIGHT UP THE WATER AT COOPER’S BAYOU ↞
Adventure into Tampa Bay as night falls.
Watch the last light of the day over Cooper’s Bayou before your LED kayak takes over.
The first thing you’ll notice is the quiet — the bayou settles as the evening deepens, and the only sounds are paddles on the water and wildlife in the mangroves. Your clear kayak is lit from beneath with color-changing LED lights that illuminate the water and the seafloor below you, turning the estuary into something you have to see to believe.
Explore the mangroves and paddle into the darkness.
Paddle through Cooper’s Bayou mangrove tunnel at night, lit from below by your color-changing clear kayak.
Your guide leads the group through the same mangrove tunnel passage as the Sunset Tour — but at night the experience is completely different. The LED lights catch the root formations overhead and the fish moving beneath you, and the enclosed tunnel creates an atmosphere that guests consistently describe as unforgettable. The after-dark estuary has its own rhythm, and your guide will keep you moving through it at a pace that lets you take it in.
Bioluminescence — A natural phenomenon in Tampa Bay
On the right nights, every paddle stroke lights up the water with natural bioluminescence.
Bioluminescence is produced by microscopic organisms — primarily dinoflagellates — that emit light when disturbed. In Tampa Bay and the surrounding estuary system, these organisms are present year-round but are most visible during warmer months, on darker nights, and in calmer, shallower water. When conditions align at Cooper’s Bayou, the water glows with every stroke. It is a living ecosystem doing something remarkable.
When bioluminescence is present, you’ll see it in every disturbance of the water — your paddle stroke, the wake of your kayak, fish darting beneath you, and the natural current moving through the estuary. The organisms produce light in response to movement, which means the more active the water, the more the bay glows around you.
Because it is entirely natural, we cannot guarantee bioluminescence on any given night. Your guide will always give you an honest assessment of conditions before you launch. The Glow Tour is designed to deliver an exceptional experience whether or not bioluminescence is present.

↠ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ↞
-
No. Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon produced by microscopic organisms in the water. It varies by season, water temperature, and moon phase and cannot be guaranteed on any given night. When it’s present, it’s extraordinary. Your guide will give you an honest read on current conditions before you launch.
-
The darker the night, the brighter the bioluminescence. For the best possible viewing conditions, look for nights with a moon phase of 55% or less — the closer to a new moon, the better. Warmer water temperatures also increase the concentration of the organisms responsible for the glow. In Tampa Bay, bioluminescence tends to be most active in the warmer months from late spring through early fall, with summer being peak season. Your guide will always give you an honest assessment of current conditions before you launch. Checking a moon phase calendar before you book is the single best way to maximize your chances.
-
Bioluminescence is the emission of light by a living organism. In Tampa Bay and the surrounding estuary system, it’s produced primarily by dinoflagellates — microscopic plankton that emit a blue-green glow when disturbed by movement in the water. It is a completely natural phenomenon requiring no artificial lights or additives. The clear kayak floor at Cooper’s Bayou puts you directly over the water so you can see the glow beneath you as well as around you.
