One of the stars of the river? Texas wild rice. This rare aquatic plant only grows right here in the San Marcos River, and it’s endangered—making it a true local treasure! Aside from turtles and fish darting beneath your kayak, you may spot some graceful great blue herons or green herons perched along the banks. These gorgeous birds are expert hunters and bring so much beauty and movement to the scenery. Fun fact: herons can strike prey with lightning speed thanks to a specialized neck vertebra!
