Wildlife to Spot While Kayaking in Winter Park’s Scenic Canals

Winter Park’s unique ecosystem offers a front-row seat to nature’s wonders! Here’s a look at some of the top wildlife you could spot on your next paddling adventure.
1. Bald Eagles: The Kings of the Sky
Keep your eyes on the treetops, boathouses, or simply soaring high overhead—and you might catch a glimpse of America’s national bird. Bald eagles are occasionally seen gliding above the lakes, scanning the waters for fish. Their white heads and powerful wingspans make them hard-to-miss and awe-inspiring to spot.
2. Owls: Silent Guardians of the Canals
Winter Park’s shaded waterways and trees make a perfect hideout for barred owls, one of the most vocal and commonly heard owl species in Florida. While they’re more often heard than seen, early morning or dusk paddles might just reward you with a sighting.
3. Turtles: Sun-Loving Locals
Turtles are some of the most common and beloved wildlife on the canals. You’ll often see them perched in the water, soaking in the Florida sunshine. Two to watch for:
- Florida softshell turtles – With leathery, pancake-like shells and long snorkel noses.
- Peninsula cooters – Hard-shelled turtles with yellow striping and chill vibes.
4. Ducks: Top-Notch Welcoming Committee
Winter Park’s lakes are a hotspot for all kinds of ducks, they often hangout by the sandy beach area we launch from, welcoming our guests for their tour!
- Mottled ducks – Florida’s native dabblers, often in pairs.
- Wood ducks – Colorful and striking, often found near tree-lined banks.
- Muscovy ducks – With their quirky red facial features, they’re curious and often paddle right up to kayakers.
The Anhinga – Nature’s Wing-Drying Supermodel
Often nicknamed the “snakebird”, with a long neck that snakes through the water and wings that stretch wide to dry in the sun, anhingas are a common—and unforgettable—sight along the lakes and canals. It’s not uncommon to see them striking a pose. They don’t have waterproof feathers like other birds, so drying off is part of their daily routine!
