At Get Up And Go Kayaking – Merritt’s Mill, you’re paddling through one of Florida’s most breathtaking spring-fed waterways. Located in the Florida Panhandle near Marianna, Merritt’s Mill Pond is fed by multiple freshwater springs that create crystal-clear water, underwater caves, and vibrant aquatic vegetation.

The constant spring flow supports an incredible variety of wildlife both above and below the surface. Here’s what you’re most likely to see on your clear kayak adventure.

Fish Beneath Your Clear Kayak

One of the biggest highlights of paddling at Merritt’s Mill is the visibility. The water clarity often allows you to see straight to the bottom.

Common fish species include:

  • Largemouth bass
  • Bluegill
  • Red-ear sunfish (shellcracker)
  • Channel catfish
  • Gar

You may see fish moving through submerged grasses or hovering near limestone ledges and spring vents.

Turtles & Reptiles

Turtles are a frequent sight along the shoreline and on fallen logs.

You’ll commonly spot:

  • Red-eared sliders
  • Florida cooters
  • Soft Shell turtles

Various non-venomous water snakes also inhabit the area and are often seen swimming near the banks. Occasionally, a cottonmouth (water moccasin) may be present, so wildlife should always be observed from a respectful distance.

River Otters & Beavers

Merritt’s Mill is home to river otters, though they’re most active in the early morning and late evening hours. If you’re lucky, you might see one surface briefly before darting away.

Beavers also inhabit the area. While they tend to be nocturnal, you may notice gnawed tree trunks or evidence of their activity along quieter sections of the shoreline.

The pond and surrounding forested areas provide habitat for a wide range of bird species.

You may see:

  • Great Blue Heron
  • Great egrets
  • Double-crested Cormorant
  • Anhinga
  • Ospreys soaring overhead
  • Wood ducks tucked into quiet coves

Cormorants and anhingas are often spotted drying their wings after diving underwater for fish, while herons and egrets patiently stalk the shallows.

Freshwater Springs & Underwater Life

Merritt’s Mill Pond is known for its numerous freshwater springs, including Jackson Blue Spring and Twin Caves. These spring vents push out cool, clear water that supports thriving aquatic plant communities and creates the iconic blue hues the area is known for.

The submerged grasses and limestone formations provide essential habitat for fish, invertebrates, and other aquatic life, making every clear kayak tour a dynamic, ever-changing experience.

Every Tour Is Different

Wildlife sightings vary depending on season, weather, and time of day. Some days you’ll see turtles lined up on logs and bass cruising below your kayak. Other days you might catch a glimpse of an otter or watch an anhinga dive beneath the surface.

At Get Up And Go Kayaking – Merritt’s Mill, each paddle is an opportunity to slow down, observe, and appreciate one of Florida’s most beautiful spring systems.
